NEW YORK — A showdown between 2024 American League Championship Series opponents resulted in a 3-2, homestand-opening win for the Yankees on Tuesday, as Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe toppled the Cleveland Guardians with back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning.

Chisholm, fresh off the injured list following an oblique strain, drilled Tanner Bibee’s first pitch of the frame over the right field wall at 105.7 mph. He now has eight home runs this season.

Volpe then took advantage of a hanging sweeper, smoking it to left at 102.2 mph for his seventh long ball of the year.

Bibee cruised before that, but he ended up with three earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. The righty didn’t permit a hit until the fifth, when Chisholm blooped a one-out single to left field. Pushed to second by a J.C. Escarra walk, Chisholm then scored on a single from DJ LeMahieu, who enjoyed a four-hit game in the Yankees’ win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Carlos Rodón spun another gem, allowing just one earned run over seven innings of work. He held Cleveland to five hits and one walk while striking out eight. The lefty also retired 17 straight after a case of fan interference – someone got in Aaron Judge’s way on a foul ball down the right-field line – ended the sixth inning.

Rodón has been on fire lately, as he came into the game with a 1.27 ERA over his last eight starts. He now has a 2.49 ERA for the season.

The Guardians’ one run off Rodón came in the seventh when LeMahieu, entrenched at second base with Chisholm returning to third, could not come up with a playable David Fry single. A game-tying knock at the time, it followed a single and a stolen base from José Ramírez.

However, the Yankees stopped the bleeding there before Mark Leiter Jr. and Devin Williams handled the final two innings. Williams, returning to closing duties after Luke Weaver went on the IL with a hamstring strain earlier in the day, allowed one run on a two-out, RBI single from Daniel Schneemann, but he got the job done.

Weaver replaced Williams as the Yankees’ closer after the latter recorded an 11.25 ERA over his first 10 games this season.

With the left side of the Bombers’ infield homering late, and Rodón shining on Tuesday, the Yankees will look to secure a series win on Wednesday against Luis L. Ortiz.

Clarke Schmidt is scheduled to start for the Yanks.
